Ultimate Samoa Guide: Hidden adventure spots

Adventures Samoa

Slip, slop and slap on the sunscreen, because things are about to get lit (insert fire emoji). This is your ultimate Samoa guide to the hidden adventure spots. We’ve all heard of the golden jewels of Samoa – such as the To-Sua trench and Piula caves ( and if you haven’t, check out 21 things to do in Samoa or Top Instagram spots in Samoa to find out more). However, I want to take you to places you may not have heard of – so before you grab that SPF50 sunscreen (because that stuff says hella naaaaah to Melanoma), get a pen, a piece of paper and take some notes!

Mt Silisili

Mt Silisili (Savaii)

If you are the type to get down and dirty with nature for two days, this-is-your-jam! Hiking up Mt. Silisili requires you to muster that inner dragon warrior. This Mount is at a height of 1,858 metres – the highest point in Samoan archipelago. The trail begins amongst  the plantation path, leading you through the natural beauty of Aopo Conservation area and some slippery slopes. Don’t be fooled by the humid weather though, because the temperatures begins to cool as you progress – so be sure to pack a jack (aka a jacket).

Mount Tafua Crater

Mt Tafua Crater (Savaii)

Nature lover, this one is for you! Mt Tafua has two craters – first is a 20 minute uphill battle, and the next is an hour’s walk- ending with a breathtaking view. It overlooks the rain-forest canopy below and gives you a panoramic view over Savaii’s volcanic cone. Be sure to look out for the Samoan flying fox and listen for native pigeon.

Canopy Walkway Savai'i

Falealupo Canopy Walkway (Savaii)

Surrounded by lush green leave is the stairway to tree heaven. The canopy walkway is 40 metres above the ground amongst giant Banyan Trees. This is the closest you will get to the life of Tarzan. One of the most underrated destination hotspots in Samoa – so be sure to add it to your list of ‘things to do’.

Falealupo Beach (Savaii)

After spending sometime at the canopy, drive 10 mins further to the Falealupo Beach. One of Samoa’s most pristine beaches. The best thing about this place is that its secluded – a whole beach to yourself! Underutilised and raw in beauty. Feel the white sand between your toes and watch the waves from the distance crash into the rocks. Crystal clear and cold water perfect after a day out in the sun. You wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!

Saleaula lava field (Savaii)

Instagrammers will swoon over this lava field. In 1905-11, the eruption of Mt Matavanu destroyed village and agricultural land. Leaving behind lava field cones stretched over 75 square km of land/sea. They can be seen as you drive into the village. Begin at the church ruins then make your way through the virgin grave. If you are keen, hike further out to the fields to the lava cliffs. The most beautiful thing about this place is the plants and trees that shoots up through the lava field – proving a point that nature always prevails #beastmode

Afu Aau Falls (Savaii)

Good things in life are hard to find, and Afu Aau falls is no exception. This waterfall is truly an enchanting experience for those water adventurers. It hides deep within the rainforest, only taking 10 minute walk to get there. For a small fee, this place is worth every penny. The pool is quite deep and it get shallow towards the outer rim – but the water is crystal clear. Jump in, snap up a gram and show your friends what they are missing out on.

Sauniatu Watefall (Upolu)

Seriously one of the most underrated waterfalls on the main island. Sauniatu Waterfall is 7km drive inland from the main east coast road. It offers scenic views of dramatic mountain landscapes and village gardens. This freshwater swimming hole/waterfall is the best kept secret of Samoa. Even better, its free and underutilised. Only opens from Mon-Sat.

Falease’ela River Walk (Upolu)

Venture off near the river bed and bank of Vai o Sina, located in Falease’ela in Lefaga bay. The tour takes about 3-6 hours so be sure to get some good rest beforehand. The river walks also takes you through waterfalls and lava formation – a magnificent natural wonder. If you’re lucky the tour guides will perform jaw-dropping climbs and jumps – only the daring travellers will follow.

Palolo Deep Marine Reserve (Upolu)

Hidden within town is a marine key biodiversity area with an array of coral and fish species. A perfect spot to snorkel, dive and swim. Be sure to arrange your trip during high tide to avoid damaging the corals. Even if you don’t intend to swim, the reserve garden is a very nice place to sit and read with lots of benches and relaxing lagoon views.

Turtle Kayak Day (Upolu)

If turtles and Kayaks are your two favourite things – welcome home. The tour begins at Vai villas, a unique village based resort in Lotofaga. Explore the mangrove, snorkel alongside the reef and have lunch on a pristine, deserted beach. Usually you will find a bale (group) of large turtles. Bring that SPF50 sunscreen because the sun is not your friend.

Samoa may be a small nation – but it offers a variety of activities for all type of adventurers. Whether relaxing on a secluded beach is your adventure, or fast-pace, heart-wrenching activity is your thing – Samoa has got it sorted for you. This is your ultimate Samoa guide to hidden adventure spots that are not often talked about – so now that you have a rough idea of activities that could be done – slap on that SPF50+ sunscreen (vital), and I will cash you ousside!
